DiscoverCycling - Tony Gibb hits the spot on his Basso!
Date added: 31/05/2010
Tony Gibb (CyclePremier.com – Metaltek/Basso) burst through the charging bunch on his Basso Astra to take victory in round one of the Elite Tour Series in London on Tuesday 25th May. The 33-year-old professional from Wooburn Green held off the challenge from Malcolm Elliott (Motorpoint – Marshalls Pasta) and several Rapha Condor Sharp riders in the final fifty metres to win the race on the tight road circuit nestling under the tower blocks in Canary Wharf.
Gibb punched the air with delight as he turned his promising form into a big win in the prestigious event. The Halfords Tour Series consists of 10 circuit races staged in towns and cities all over Britain and is being shown on ITV4 again this year. It has always been the target of the newly formed CyclePremier.com – Metaltek team which was only created in February this year. Gibb still had a huge smile long after the presentation was made to thousands of fans that had lined the streets for the 70-minute criterium race. “I have looked at all the courses and there are a few suit me but this one was perfect,” said Gibb: “I was flying at the Hillingdon Grand Prix last week but I kept something in the tank and I was flying tonight but just did the efforts when I needed to."
"There was a serious break up the road in the middle of the race and I thought that it would come back and it did. There was a Rapha lead-out going on in the last couple of laps and I don’t think they counted on me being on the right wheel. There were two riders who had gone clear with two laps to go and they made the perfect target for me to sprint for when we came round the final corner and they were fifty yards away. As we caught the two breakaway’s, Dean Downing (Rapha Condor Sharp) opened up his sprint on the right and we got very close but I dropped the hammer again and made it across the line first.” “I am a lot more relaxed this year,” continued the former World and Commonwealth Games track medallist: “Last year I had to do a lot of team management stuff but my manager Rod Freeman is doing that this year. I have been able to concentrate on my training and it has paid dividends.” Gibb also did well in the intermediate sprints competition having finished first, third and fifth.
“I went with the first sprint because I wanted to gauge where to open up my sprint from in the final lap and it panned out perfectly. I didn’t go flat out in the second one because I didn’t want to show my hand to the other teams. Sadly Jason (White) crashed about five laps to go and he would have been our second counter in the team result and now we will have to work hard to move up in that category.” Tony had much praise for his teammates: “It was a tough race. Simon Wilson went on the front to bring back two breakaway groups and it is a big effort to do that in one of these events when you do it on your own.” Team manager Rod Freeman was delighted with the result on the night and had expected something big from Gibb.
“I think the signs were there when Tony won the Hillingdon GP last week,” said Freeman: “That’s something he has not done before. Tony had told me that he was going into the Tour Series in the best form he has been in for some time. He looked sharp in the first few laps and I was wondering if he could win. We have a little bit of work to do as a team but Jason’s crash certainly knocked us back a bit but there are many races still to go. There are tough weeks ahead of us but we are up for the challenge. We have accepted an invitation to ride in the two extra Tour Series criteriums in Belfast and Dublin next month and we should be firing on all cylinders long before we get there.”

Fuel Costs Driving Motorists onto Two Wheels!
Date added: 09/04/2010
DiscoverCycling predict Surge in interest in commuter cycling as fuel prices rise to all time high.
Interest in bikes and cycling accessories has certainly increased since the announcement that fuel prices would increase further during 2010. Previous fuel shortages have had a positive effect on cycling particularly in the urban areas and with brands like Scott, Merida and Felt reporting a substantial lift in interest and sales of urban bikes.
Modern bikes are very well designed and built to an exceptionally high standard with features like suspension seat posts that help take the bumps out of the road and adjustable handlebars to enable the rider to adjust the reach and achieve a more comfortable riding position.
Also one of the major fears of being left at the side of the road with a flat tyre has been erased with the arrival of a puncture prevention product SLIME that is inserted to each tyre and is 90% effective in maintaining tyre pressure following penetration by a thorn or small piece of glass. All these developments and more are available to make the rider experience more pleasurable.
