My New Basso Reef

I decided to take up road cycling for several reasons, those being to improve my cardio fitness, to take part in triathlons and social cycle rides and also to occasionally cycle to and from work.

Fortunately my employer is in the cycle to work scheme so decided to purchase a bike through the scheme. Prior to road cycling I had experience of mountain biking although not for a number of years. I would say that I am confident on a bike although have never ridden a road bike before. After many hours of research in shops and on the internet I decided upon the Basso Reef. I decided to go for a bike at the top end of my budget because I knew I would save money through the cycle to work scheme and I wanted something that I would not grow out of too quickly should I enjoy cycling as much as I thought I would and I also wanted something that looked and felt quality.

I believe I have found this in the Basso Reef. The Basso Reef with a RRP of £1200 ticked all the boxes for performance and I think looks great. Whoever I have shown the bike to has commented on its beauty. The first ride. Myself and a colleague of mine are of the same standard, i.e beginners. We plotted out a route taking us on a 22 mile circuit around the Vale of Belvoir in Nottinghamshire. I found the ride to be fantastic and I loved every minute of it. So much so that I have clocked up around 150 miles in the three weeks that I have had the bike. That may not sound much to some cyclists indeed some of my friends do that in one ride but for me, a beginner it goes to show how much I love this bike.

At the heart of the bike is an aluminium frame with a solid and neat finish. The bike has rear carbon seat stays and carbon forks and so the ride is very smooth when clocking up the miles. The handling is excellent. It goes where you ask it to go with no fuss and glides around corners without scaring you. The gear system is Campagnolo, a mixture of Xenon and Mirage. I have found the gears to be excellent with good reassuring solid gear changes.

There is plenty of speed at the top end to get you moving along nicely. As for the comfort, I was expecting a very sore behind after the first few rides. Surprisingly though the bike is very comfortable and whether you are on the top or bottom of the bars it feels great.

To sum up the Basso Reef is an excellent bike. The service from DiscoverCycling.com excellent and from here I plan to increase the mileage on the Reef and to enter some Sportives in the summer.
